OOC: I wrote this story to explain why were were all weak and poor after the transition from 2x to 3x. I'm being strong-armed into posting it. * Gives @LadyLevi a look *
The night was still and filled with a sense of hushed expectation. Even the creatures north of Leinster seemed restless and wandered aimlessly, attacking with reckless abandon--and more then their usual ferocity--any being hapless enough to cross their path.
Gilyn Trollsbane and The great wizard Krohn, had just left the gates of Leinster, where a wild bacchanalian party was in progress. The frenzied merry-making of the revellers celebrating the death of the old year, and birth of the new, had made them uneasy, and together, wordlessly, they had sought the sanctuary of the beautiful land to the north and west of the great city.
Gilyn's heart was heavy with forboding on this strange eve, and she scanned the horizon uneasily, seeking any signs of a possible threat to her or her leige. Unable to find any cause for her discontent, her troubled gaze crossed that Krohn's. He smiled as their eyes met--a ghostly half-smile, yet his dark eyes remained somber, and were filled with a soul-deep weariness.
"What troubles you, M'Lord?"
Krohn abrupty turned away, avoiding her questioning gaze. His eyes scanned the sky and at last he spoke, but his words were halting, and lacking the calm eloquence which was his usual manner.
"So much work here left undone..." his words trailed off.
"This night is strange M'Lord, I feel as if a great doom is approaching us..."
"Gilyn, my dear friend, I have always wondered if you possessed a bit of the gift, and now I know it is true." He smiled, and for an instant, it was his real smile. "I know by my art that the world as we know it, will end tonight. Even now, the instrument of our destruction approaches." He paused, pointing at a bright speck of light in the sky.
Gilyn looked at the point of light uncertainly, and turned to Krohn in puzzlement.
"There is little time," he said. "Listen and remember, for our existance will not end this night. I have been blessed with a vision, and given the knowledge that we will be reborn in a new land. Find the others, and seek me out. There is great work to be done in the new Realm." His eyes again, sought out the northern sky.
Gilyn followed his gaze and saw that the speck of light had turned into a great flaming orb. It hurtled across the sky, leaving behind a fiery trail. A jolt of terror went through her body, and she reached out instinctively for the hand of her friend. He grasped her hand tightly in his own, and brought it to his lips, holding it there for a brief moment. His calmness seemed to wash over her.
"Krohn--If we must die and be reborn to continue our work--I am proud and pleased to be here with you--at the end of all things."
"An appropriate night for endings, M'Lady--and beginnings." He pitched his voice louder, to be heard above the rising wind. "It will be difficult, at first. We will be weak and helpless in the new land. The memories of many of our friends and allies may not survive the transformation, and some will be reborn in new bodies...perhaps to fight for the Opposition, with little or no memory of the Path of Light. Do not be swayed." He laid his hand upon her brow. "Remember me...remember MfH...remember...
The world was suddenly bathed in a brilliant light, threaded with great shafts of lightening ripping through swirling, blood red clouds. Gilyn felt a great gust of hot wind tumbling her through the chaos, pulling her hand from Krohn's grasp, but still his words rang hollowly in her mind..."Remember..."
